Free ways to get them reading

Torch-under-the-duvet club

Lights off, torches on, ten extra minutes. It feels like breaking the rules, which is the whole point.

Read to the dog

Pets (and teddies) are the least judgy audience in the world. Great for wobbly readers.

Library mission

Everyone picks one book they'd never usually choose. Free, and the bus there counts as an adventure.

Build a reading den

Two chairs, a sheet and every cushion in the house. Snacks are compulsory.

Book swap with a mate

Swap a finished book with a friend, then compare notes. A thrifty way to keep the shelf fresh.

Audiobook road trips

Car journeys go quicker with a story. Most libraries lend audiobooks free through an app.
