Magazine collage

Gather up the old magazines, catalogues and junk mail and go on a picture hunt. Cut out faces, food, animals or anything that catches their eye, then stick them all together into one big, busy picture. Older kids love making a mood board of everything they're into.

What you need

Check the magazines are suitable for kids before you hand them over.

Let's go

  1. Pick a theme. A crowd of faces, a giant pile of food, a zoo, the colour blue, or "everything I love".

  2. Flick through the magazines and cut or tear out every picture that fits.

  3. Lay them all out on the card before sticking, moving them around until it looks just right. Overlapping is good.

  4. Glue them down, starting with the pictures at the back.

  5. Add speech bubbles, a title or drawings with a felt tip to finish.

Real talk

  • Make silly creatures by mixing up heads, bodies and legs from different pictures.
  • Older kids can make a vision board of things they want to do this year, or a "dream bedroom".
  • Tearing instead of cutting makes a lovely soft-edged look, and it's easier for little ones.
