Twenty questions

One person thinks of something, anything at all, and everyone else has twenty yes or no questions to work out what it is. No kit, no mess, and it works anywhere, from long car journeys to restaurant waits.

What you need

Great for the car, but keep the driver out of it if it's getting tense!

Let's go

  1. One person thinks of something. An animal, a food, a place, a person or an object.

  2. Everyone else takes turns asking questions that can only be answered yes or no.

  3. Start broad. "Is it alive?" "Is it bigger than a car?" "Can you eat it?" Then narrow it down.

  4. Count the questions out loud. Anyone can guess at any time, but a wrong guess uses up a question.

  5. If nobody gets it in twenty questions, the thinker wins and chooses again.

Real talk

  • Play "Animal, vegetable or mineral" for younger kids. The thinker says which group it's in to start.
  • Teach them clever first questions. Splitting things in half each time gets you there faster.
  • Make it personal. "It's something in this car", or "It's a place we've been on holiday".

Long journey ahead?

Break up a road trip with a stop at a farm park, a castle or a big adventure playground on the way.
